話し手が推測したことを言う表現。「〜でしょう / だろう」に比べ、判断の根拠が薄く、不確かな推量である。

英文：

“maybe / perhaps”

Indicates that there is a possibility.

An expression in which the speaker says what he or she guesses. It is an

uncertain guess with less basis for judgment than ”〜でしょう / 〜だろう”

1. 動詞文

午後から雨がやむ かもしれません 。

The rain might stop from the afternoon.

来週、大型の台風が来る かもしれない 。

There might be a big typhoon next week.

最近、夫の帰りが遅いし、いい匂いがするし、浮気している かもしれない 。

My husband has been coming home late lately, he smells nice, so he might be

having an affair.

今日は仕事がたくさんあるので、飲み会に参加できない かもしれない 。

I have a lot of work to do today, so I might not be able to attend the

drinking party.

ピーターさんは薬指に指輪をしているし、結婚している かもしれない 。

Peter has a ring on his ring finger, he might be married.

2. い形容詞文

新しい先生は顔が怖いし、厳しい かもしれない 。

The new teacher has a scary face and might be strict.

このカバン、値段が書いていないけど、日本製だし、高い かもしれない 。

There is no price on this bag, but it is made in Japan, so it might be

expensive.

3. な形容詞文

トムさんは高そうなギターを持っているし、ギターが上手 かもしれない 。

Tom has an expensive guitar, and he might be a good guitar player.

今夜、息子の友達のジェームス君が家に晩ご飯を食べに来るんだけど、どんな料理を作ったらいいんだろう。日本食は好きじゃない かもしれない し。

My son’s friend, James, is coming over for dinner tonight, and I don’t know

what kind of food I should cook for him. He might not like Japanese food…hmm.

It might be dangerous to go to that country now.

4. 名詞文

新しく来た転校生は目が茶色いし、花も高いし、ハーフ かもしれない 。

The new transfer student has brown eyes, and a tall nose, so he might be half.

あの子、学生服を着ているけど、見たことないし、この学校の生徒じゃない かもしれない 。

She’s wearing a school uniform, but I’ve never seen her before, so she might

not be a student of this school.

うちのポチ、全然ご飯食べないし、病気 かもしれない 。

My dog pochi doesn’t eat at all, he might be sick.
